Description
This postcard depicts a woman, possibly on a boat, trying to get out of her cabin.
The woman is wearing a blue dress with an empire waistline, high above the natural waist. This waistline is accentuated by a strip of black fabric with white polka dots, which is also found at the cuffs and in a strip below her knees. She is also wearing long white gloves and a large-brimmed pink hat adorned by a white ribbon with black polka dots, forming a large bow at the back.
The strip of fabric around her knees is too tight for her to step out of her cabin: that is a way to make fun of the "hobble skirts" introduced in the 1910s by Paul POIRET, which prevented women from having full use of their legs and feet, making them "hobble". These skirts went out of fashion at the beginning of the First World War.
