Jules LARDIN (1787-c1870) had frequented in his youth the composer from Liège, then French, André GRETRY (1741-1813) author of the opera-ballet "Zémire et Azor". "Zémire et Azor", adaptation of the tale "Beauty and the Beast" by Jeanne-Marie LEPRINCE de BEAUMONT, will be presented for the first time before the court of France, in Fontainebleau, on November 9, 1771, then at the Comédie-Italienne , in Paris, on December 16, 1771. Considered one of GRETRY's three best scores, Eugène SCRIBE (1791-1861) reworked the score to reduce it to two acts, in a revival, at the Opéra-Comique, on February 21, 1832. To finally be restored to four acts at the revival of June 29, 1846.

The booklet was dedicated on September 22, 1846 by the author Jules LARDIN, to Madame Louise LAVALLEY, residing at 75 rue Rambuteau in Paris, wife of Monsieur Henri DALLOT, merchant, from whom she will divorce.
