Description
Carte de visite format photograph of Eugénie Alix BRESSANT known as Alix BRESSANT or Mlle Bressant (1838 - 1909), a French actress and novelist. The lady is represented in a photographer's studio wearing a long winter coat trimmed with fur on the collar, the cuffs and the border, her hands are hidden in a fur muff; under it she's wearing a long crinoline dress with polka dot motif, and a bonnet hat tied under the chin with a large bow.
Eugénie Alix BRESSANT made her debut in October 1859 at the Théâtre du Vaudeville, in "Les Dettes du Cœur", a comedy by Auguste MAQUET. Then she played from 1861 to 1865 at the Théâtre du Gymnase before going on tour in Russia.
In 1867, while a resident of the Imperial Michel Theatre, she married Prince Mikhail Viktorovitch KOTCHOUBEI in Saint Petersburg, with whom she had five children. Widowed in 1873, she moved back to Paris and married five years later Baron Paul-Adrien d'ARTIGUES, prefect of Ariège.
From his first marriage, Alix BRESSANT ceased to play on stage and occupied herself with literature. She had a few works published, first under her maiden name, then under that of Princess Kotchoubey (also spelled Kotschoubey) and finally under that of Madame d'Artigues.
