Description
The first book to illustrate the history of fashion with only photographs (235 Illustrations) by Photography Historian Alison Gernsheim. Reprint of Fashion and Reality 1840–1914, Faber and Faber, London, 1963. Images are united with identifications and descriptions of the chief costume articles and a commentary that includes childhood memories of the period. Photographers are identified where possible. Every photograph is captioned and annotated.
The contents of the book are split into two parts: Part 1; The Rise and Fall of the Crinoline and Part 2; Curves and Verticals. The total number of pages is 111, including 2 inside covers, 6 opening pages, 13 pages of Notes on the Photographs, 3 preface pages, 70 book pages, 6 bibliography pages, 4 index pages, and a 7-page catalog of Dover Books.
The cover photograph is known as “A Lady with Parrot” depicting Actrice Gabrielle Thérèse COUSSIN known as Mademoiselle LINDA posing for a publicity poster for the Paris-Théatre (1875).
