Description
Paper photograph representing 7 dolls holding hands or arms and dancing like a farandole. In the background, a painted decoration representing the arrow of Ile de la Cité, with on the front, the tree-lined of Vert Galant garden, then the Pont Neuf, the buildings of the Place Dauphine and in the background we can see the silhouette of Notre-Dame. On both sides fall large white curtains which represent the mist rising from the waters of the Seine.

This photo shows part of the stage entitled “L’ȋle de la Cité” imagined by the french actor, decorator and costume designer Georges DOUKING (1902-1987). The scene features a total of 10 ladies in day dresses. Our photo is a detail showing 7 dolls from left to right designed by: Jeanne LAFAURIE, Madame CARVEN, Jacques FATH, Charles MONTAIGNE, Lucile MANGUIN, Raphaël, Jean DESSES. It was published in a double page magazine (page 22 and 23).

The "Théâtre de la Mode" was conceived as a traveling show, at the initiative of the Chambre syndicale de la haute couture parisienne (French trade association of high fashion), with the aim of promoting haute couture and related trades. The exhibition took place in Paris, at Pavillon de Marsan, from March 28 to April 29, 1945, then traveled the world until 1946. The presentation consists of fourteen decorated paintings under the artistic direction of Christian Bérard. The wire dolls were made by J St MARTIN from a drawing by Eliane BONABEl, the faces were molded from the sculptures of REBULL.
