Charles KIFFER (French, Paris 1902 – 1992 Paris)

Charles KIFFER is a French painter, draftsman, sculptor, engraver and poster designer. He illustrated many posters for French stars such as Edith PIAF or Yves MONTAND. Charles KIFFER was born on June 8, 1902 in Paris into an artist's family. His father was a tailor who worked for many actors and his mother taught the piano. From 1918, he attended the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. He was then a student of the painter Fernand CORMON. He began drawing in 1923 for his own pleasure, the portrait of the French singer Maurice CHEVALIER, who then entrusted him with the creation of posters for his shows. He became one of CHEVALIER's favorite poster artists, with whom he worked until 1963. Charles KIFFER, also passionate about printing processes, he produced his own lithographs in the years 1929. He illustrated many posters for other stars such as George GUETARY (1933), Charles TRENET, Edith PIAF (1936), Yves MONTAND, Gaby MORLEY in 1939. He also designed in the fields of dance, theater and circus, big names like Joséphine BAKER, Brigitte BARDOT, Mistinguett. In 1949, KIFFER hosted radio Zappy Max where he met other artists such as Gilbert BECAUD, Annie CORDY or the Compagnons de la Chanson. KIFFER has also drawn caricatures of actors on stage, mainly in French such as Marlène DIETRICH. KIFFER exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne as well as the Salon des Tuileries in Paris. Kiffer also produced numerous stage decorations and curtains for the Casino de Paris. More than sixty-five years after his first poster, Kiffer was still working in his studio on Ile Saint-Louis in Paris where he loved welcoming friends and contemporary artists. Charles KIFFER died at his Parisian home on Monday January 20, 1992.
