Félix AUVRAY (French, Cambrai 1800 - 1833 Paris)

Félix AUVRAY, born March 31, 1800 in Cambrai, and died September 11, 1833 in Paris, is a French painter, writer and caricaturist. He is the brother of the painter Hippolyte-Alexandre AUVRAY and the sculptor Louis AUVRAY. He spent all his youth in Valenciennes where his family had settled shortly after his birth. Entered as an apprentice in 1812 to a house painter, he will nevertheless have the possibility of following the courses given by Jacques-François MOMAL and the sculptor Leonce de FREUZAL at the school of the Academy of Valenciennes. In 1820 the municipality of this city grants him a scholarship which allows him to settle in Paris and enter the Antoine-Jean GROS (baron Gros) studio where he will maintain a friendly and close relationship with BERGER. In 1823 he obtained a very significant first medal for sketches, in 1824 he exhibited at the salon under his name Felix, and under his surname. In 1825 he left for 3 years in Italy where he stayed in Rome and made a trip to Florence in 1826. He returns to Paris in 1829, where he settles at 9 rue Childebert.
