Description
Photograph of the official portrait of Empress Eugenie painted by Franz Xaver WINTERHALTER in 1853.

This support, called a "carte de visite", was invented by the photographer Disdéri in 1854. Very early on, the imperial couple, understood the interest of photography as a tool of publicity, and particularly at the beginning of the reign of Napoleon III. The very thin cardboard on which the photograph is pasted suggests that it is a photograph from the years 1854-55 and probably executed as a political propaganda photograph.
