Description
Portrait of a woman known as Gaby Deslys, born Marie-Elise-Gabrielle CAIRE (1881 – 1920), a singer and actress during the early 20th century, sitting in a photographer studio on a high wooden chair posing in a dark probably black dress in silk satin covered with tulle, plunging V-neckline, open strap shoulders, the waist line and the skirt are decorated with silk roses. The picture is signed on the right "Gaby 1920".

Deslys contracted a severe throat infection caused by the spanish influenza pandemic in December 1919. She was operated on multiple times and died in Paris in February 1920. The photograph was most likely signed by the singer during her stay in the hospital just before her death.
