Description
Folk Breton costume purse in wool felt of red and black colours with multicolor embroideries, representing on the front a coat of arms of the city Brest, first created for Anne de Bretagne as Queen of France, and on the other side a young man in traditional costume playing a binioù, a type of bagpipe. The word "Biniou" means bagpipe in the Breton language.

Until the middle of the twentieth century, the common people had in fact three categories of clothes: work dress, Sunday dress and ceremonial costume but contrary to popular opinion, the traditional Breton costume does not go back until the first quarter of the 19th century. The repeal of sumptuary laws during the French Revolution and the economic development of rural populations encouraged popular expression in matters of costume. The circulation and availability of textile materials, as well as the fall in their cost as a result of the industrial revolution, led to the rapid explosion of customary guises and their diversification. We then witness an expansion of festive peasant costumes.
