Description
Painted portrait representing Sophie MEYER (1763-1825) wife of the painter Jean-Baptiste REGNAULT (1754-1829). The woman wears a blue indoor dress belted under the chest with a cord and decorated with a large lace collar. She wears a black curly wig.

Sophie MEYER is the daughter of the Parisian Master Watchmaker François MEYER (Former Member of Parliament in 1779) who had his shop Place du Palais-Royal in Paris before the French Revolution, then Quai Conti afterwards. The November 18, 1786, Sophie married the French painter Jean-Baptiste REGNAULT (She was never a baroness, since her husband was knighted the July 19, 1829 and Sophie died in 1825). She seems to have carried out some portraits which she signs "Femme REGNAULT" (REGNAULT wife).
