Description
Painting portrait of woman khnow as Madame Ursule KOECHLIN (1806-1891) born DOLLFUS, sitting in a chair wearing a white silk dress with V-neckline and transparent muslin gigot sleeves. She is holding a book in her right hand.
The DOLLFUS family belongs to the upper middle class of Mulhouse. It occupies a significant position in the politics of this city but especially in the textile industry, in particular through the intermediary of Jean-Henri DOLLFUS father (1724-1802), co-founder in 1746, with Samuel KOECHLIN (1719-1776), of the textile industry of the Indienne of Mulhouse. The KOECHLIN family, originally from Switzerland, became French in 1798. The first factory of painted canvases in Mulhouse, according to the technique of indiennage, opened in 1758, under the company name Koechlin, Dollfus & Cie. Their great success triggers emulation within the Mulhouse bourgeoisie and a veritable little industrial revolution, Mulhouse becoming one of the major centers of the textile industry in Europe.
Ursule DOLLFUS is the oldest daughter of Daniel DOLLFUS and Anne Marie MIEG. In August 1813 she married André KOECHLIN son of Jean Jacques KOECHLIN and Anne Catherine DOLLFUS. Her husband, André KOECHLIN, entered the DMC house (abbreviated of Dollfus-Mieg et Compagnie) as an associate of her stepfather; when he died in 1818 and until 1826 he was its chief chief. Thanks to his brothers-in-law, he then founded the house "André Koechlin et Cie".
In 1800, the marriage between Daniel DOLLFUS, nephew of Jean-Henri DOLLFUS, with Anne-Marie MIEG who make entered the financial part of this last family in the industrial history of this large family and thus form the company Dollfus-Mieg et Compagnie, abbreviated as DMC, one of the largest European textile and industrial groups of the 20th century.
