Description
Painted leaf fan with 17 ivory sticks, openwork and carved with stylized gilded floral motifs and handpainted "chinoiserie" characters. Decorated on the handle with two mother of pearl circles from both sides. The main side is in paper with handpainted scene, representing young people in a park landscape, a man and a woman cuddling on the front, and another loving couple on the right. 

Chinoiserie entered European art and decoration in the mid-to-late 17th century. The popularity of chinoiserie peaked around the middle of the 18th century when it was associated with the rococo style and with works by François BOUCHER, Thomas CHIPPENDALE, and Jean-Baptist PILLEMENT.
