Fan of painted pleated black silk with 16 ebony sticks. Hand painted with a scene in black and white monochrome representing a well drressed noble woman leaning on what looks like an oourdoor stairs balustrade, looking at the full moon on a background of a dark night forest. Like most mourning fans of this period, it is painted in grisaille (grey wash). The sticks of ebony wood are adorned with openwork floral decoration.Materials
