Description
Enameled pin brooch representing the bas-relief of the Folies Bergere illustrated by the famous Russian cabaret dancer Lila NIKOLSKA.

The Folies Bergere is a cabaret music hall, located in Paris, France. It opened on 2 May 1869 as the Folies Trévise, with light entertainment including operettas, comic opera, popular songs, and gymnastics. It became the Folies Bergère on 13 September 1872, named after nearby rue Bergère. The current facade dates from 1926 and is due to the French architect, decorator and painter Maurice PICAUD (1900-1977) called Pico. The artist was inspired, for the central realization of this facade, by the Russian dancer and model Lila NIKOLSKA (1904-1955), famous in Paris in the 1920s. Elizaveta “Lila” NIKOLSKA was an important dancer from the 1920s-1930s. Between 1923-27, she was working as a choreographer with the Prague Ballet. At the same time she was a choreographer with the Folies Bergere in Paris, as well as a performer. Her performance in France can be seen in the 1927 film La Revue des Revues.
