Description
Painting portrait of countess Olympe de LERNAY (French, ca. 1801 - 1864), born Rose-Olympe MILON de VILLIERS. Her father, Alexandre-Louis-Joseph, count MILON de VILLIERS, was an auditor at the council of state, former sous-prefect and prefect in several departments in France till 1830. Her mother, Angélique-Francoise-Magloire MENJOT de DAMMARTIN, also issued from a big nobel family. Countess Olympe de LERNAY was a great lady of her time. She was a very talented poet and writer, and also known as a painter, portraitist, exhibited and worked in Paris and Orleans from 1835 to 1837. "Journal des femmes", French women's magazine of 19th century, which she is holding in her hand on this portrait, makes a reference to the story "Barbe de mon voisin" ("Beard of my neighbor") written by countess de LERNAY and published at the very same magazine June 1st, 1835.
