Description
This postcard features two fashion figures, "before" and "now".
"Before" or "Avant" refers to the 1860s, the fashion being recognizable by the very large skirt, made possible by the caged crinoline worn under it, as well as her wide sleeves or pagoda sleeves, a short-brimmed bonnet tied by a large bow, and her umbrella.
"Now" or "Maintenant" refers to the 1900s, the fashion being recognizable by a very narrow or "hobble" skirt, the "S" shape of her body given by corsetry, as well as a large, heavily adorned hat.
In this drawing, the size of the fashionable 1900s hats is made fun of, giving it the same size as the 1860s crinolined skirt.
