Standard practice was to stamp the size, location, and year of manufacturing on the interior of the helmet. Its production began in 1939 and with only minor changes it was the standard design for Soviet helmets for the next 29 years, It is also the design for the helmet on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow. After the WWII such helmets were transferred to educational institutions and civil defense units. Also, at the end of the WWII and through the Cold War, many Russian SSh-39 were converted for use by member countries of the Warsaw Pact military.
