Description
Bag of shampoo powder by L'Oreal.

The name "shampooing" (as written on this bag) arrived in France from England in the 1870s. It originates from a fragrance "Nag Champa" imported from India by Sake Dean Mahomed and based on a combination of magnolia or frangipani (plumeria) and sandalwood. This Anglo-Indian traveller surgeon and entrepreneur, opened in 1814 a bathing establishments in Brighton where he practices traditional massages and relaxing based on this lotion named simply "Champa". Quickly "The Indian Medicated Vapour Bath (type of Turkish bath), a cure to many diseases and giving full relief when every thing fails" are promoted. This business was an immediate success and Sake Dean Mahomed became known as "Dr. Brighton". Hospitals referred patients to him and he was appointed as shampooing surgeon to both King George IV and William IV. "To shampoo" ends up referring to the action of "deep cleansing".
