Photograph of Princess Natalie PALEY crouched with her arms around a dog in front of a garden bed. Her ensemble consists of a light button down jacket with contrasting buttons and brooches at the collar and a long pleated skirt. She sports a pillbox hat, leather heels, and corduroy gloves.

Natalie Paley (1905-1981) was a Russian princess and granddaughter of Tsar Alexander II who became a Paris fashion model for Schiaparelli and Chanel in the 1930s, later appearing in French and American films. The dog pictured is the terrier "Billy" belonging to writer Erich Maria Remarque. Erich Maria Remarque was a German novelist, most known for his novel "All is Quiet on the Western Front" (1928). He met Natalie Paley in the early 1940s at which point they became lovers for some time until their relationship ended in the early 1950s.
