Description
Boléro in a purple silk satin with gold thread embroidery and metallic sequins throughout in botanical fernlike motif with flowers up the arms, chest and back. Metallic gold threaded pompoms embellish the trim and epaulettes, also embroidered with metalic sequins and flowers. The back features a central pentagonal shape in sequins and gold thread from which flowers grow. Traditional matador costume, traje de luces (suit of lights). Stage use.
The bolero belonged to Carolina OTERO, "La Belle Otero", a renowned Spanish-French courtesan, actress, and dancer of the Belle Epoque era known for her lavish style, romantic entanglements, and contributions to Parisien nightlife. She was known to wear boleros for her stage performances, an allusion to her spanish origins.
