Description
Feather ornament for hat made at the base of natural Egret feathers

The plumes were very fashionable in hairstyles and hats after 1909 and the fashion of Orientalism brought by the Russian ballets of Diaghiliev. Hat makers used a very large amount of feathers. Like the fur that still gives an indication of the luxury of the person wearing it (a mink coat being expensive than a astrakan coat for example) the feathers also indicated the level of wealth of the person who wore them. The most popular feathers were Bird-of-Paradise or Ostrich but of course the Egret feathers had a place apart.
