Description
Caricature-type drawing representing the French statesman Georges CLEMENCEAU (1841-1929) during the offensive of March 21, 1918, in the Saint-Quentin region, in France. He is dressed in the famous 3-piece suit, in striped wool (not visible in the drawing) worn with gaiters and decorated with his cane and his hat.
Ferdinand BACH was the lover of the novelist Madeleine CLEMENCEAU (1870-1949), daughter of Georges CLEMENCEAU and wife of the Parisian lawyer Numa JACQUEMAIRE. Ferdinand, very much in love and although seeing Madeleine daily, sent her a letter every morning. This romantic correspondence, discovered in a cupboard when the novelist died, was destroyed by her heirs.
