Description
Chinese wraparound skirt traditionnally called mamianqun : it is composed of two apron separated by two panels of pleats. It is made of green damask silk embroidered with cherry tree branches and butterflies. A pink braid is sewn around the aprons and at the bottom of the skirt, while a white cotton belt with buttonholes allows to hold the skirt. One panel of pleats was sewn afterwards and cannot be opened.

Mamianqun was a traditional skirt worn by Chinese women from the Song dynasty (960-1279) to the 1930s, when it got progressively replaced by the qipao. However, a mamianqun revival has been initiated since the 1980s.

This item makes part of a ensemble donated by Christophe DUBOIS RUBIO, which was formerly belonging to Russian poet Larissa ANDERSEN (1916-2012). She spent her youth years in China, then lived in different places including Tahiti and Saïgon. She settled in Yssingeaux (France) for her retirement.
