Description
Upper part of a traditional mask used for the Malang theatrical dance, organized in East Java island (Indonesia). The tiara is carved with vegetal branches and pink flowers, joining in a central point on which a flower with a burning gem is figured. A fabric link and two side holes allow to adjust it for the wearer.
Malang narrative structure is based on the Panji tales, relating a love story between prince Panji and her beloved Candra. This theatrical dance is based on 64 traditional characters, each one represented by a unique adorned mask, made of wood or pasteboard. The different colors used to paint them are standardized, they suggest values as courage for the red and peace for the green.
