Square brooch with rounded edges, made of black faceted jet, embellished in the center with a yellow celluloid profile of a sphynx in a gilded round dotted frame.In the early 20th century Egypt was of great interest in the West starting with the Ballets Russes "Cleopatre" ballet of 1909, and continued with the discovery of Tutankhamun tomb in 1922. This brought about the Egyptian Revival period where design in jewellery, fashion and furniture was inspired by Egypt.
