Description
Black wool men's tuxedo suit consisting of a coat, a tailcoat jacket, both double breasted with black silk peak lapels and four pockets on the coat and two upper pockets on the jacket, and a pair of pleated trousers with one strip. The coat and the jacket are lined inside with black silk, and white silk with thin black stripes inside the sleeves.
This tuxedo was custom-made for Mr Nicolas KAFKALIDES by the Cairo tailor A. EI CHERBINI in 1952. Collaboration between the creator and the Hellenic Community of Cairo ended with the NASSER revolution in 1956.
The Kafkalides family moved from Leros to Cairo in 1875. The head of the family at that time was Mr. Nikolaos Matandos KAFKALIDES, the owner of a paper mill. He had a son, Dr. Zephyros KAFKALIDES (a pediatrician, he worked as a director of a hospital, he was also a physician to the royal family of Egypt). Zephyros had two sons, Athanasios and Nikolaos KAFKALIDES. Dr. Athanasios KAFKALIDES was a very famous neuropsychiatrist. Mr. Nikolaos KAFKALIDES was a civil engineer. His wife was Vassiliki SHASKA. Daughter of Orestis SHASKAS, director of a commercial bank in Egypt. They had a son, Mr. Alexis KAFKALIDES, who donated this tuxedo and to the collection of the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation.
