Description
In the book is examined the history and growth of the flourishing lace industries throughout the world after the French Revolution, the struggle between a dying hand industry and rising machine competitor. The author analyzes this conflict, paying particular attention to the lace industries of France, Belgium, England and Ireland. The special characteristics of such laces as Chantilly, Valenciennes, Mechlin, Cluny and Point d 'Alencon are described.
An appendix treats the basic techniques of lace-making and a useful bibliography is provided.
