Description
Two women wearing conical hats. The woman on the left is wearing a dark skirt and matching suit jacket on top of a light blouse and three tear pearl opera necklace. The woman on the right is wearing a light skirt-suit set with a beaded princess-style necklace and large studded earrings.

Nón lá / conical hats originated in Vietnam and are connected to many cultures across the south and east Asia. The hats came to America in the late 1800s with immigrants from Asia. The hats were then called “coolie hats”-“coolie” being a racial slur for indentured laborers of Asian descent. The hats were appropriated and brought into mainstream fashion by Valentina in the 1930s.
