Description
Paper photograph depicting a fashion model wrapped in a dark scarf worn over the head and under an arm like a sari. She is adorned with metallic leaf-shaped jewels across her forehead, on her neck, and down her arm. The photograph has been manually retouched with a black pen to give the woman longer eyelashes, fuller eyebrows, and eyeliner of flourish design.

European fashion designers appropriated cultures of North Africa and Asia in surplus during the 1920s and 1960s. This ensemble is an appropriation of India’s traditional saris which can be traced back to the Indus Valley civilization in 2800 BCE and is still a rich cultural garment for Hindu women today.
