Her left arm is resting on the plane seat, her right arm is resting on the bouquet and her legs are primarily obscured by the bouquet with attached ribbon in her lap.MAKAROVA was a Soviet principal ballet dancer at the Kirov Ballet [known today as the Mariinsky Ballet] until she defected to the west on September 4, 1970 while touring in London with the company. This photo was taken shortly after she defected and right before she began a career at the Royal Ballet in London when she land in New York City for a tour.
