Paper photograph representing eight guests, three women and five men, including, Mrs. Sidney SMITH, P.A. CLARK, Mrs. James T. BURDEN, Stanford WHITE, James Henry SMITH, Norman WHITEHOUSE, Mrs. Stuyvesant FISH, and Sidney SMITH, at James Hazen HYDE’s high society ball at Louis SHERRY’s restaurant. The ladies are wearing 18th century inspired gowns, with multiple ribbons, bows, flowers and lace details, as well as different pearl and diamond jewels, with black chokers, brooches, and holding fans. The gentlemen are dressed in classic smokings.

The celebration was held in Sherry’s Restaurant at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue on the evening of January 31, 1905. The costume party set in the recreated gardens of the Versailles of 18th century France, organized by James Hazen HYDE, a Manhattan socialite and supreme party-er and dandy of the Gilded Age. Only the wealthiest 400 guests were invited and had been instructed to arrive in costume; the women wore lavish dresses, every detail of which was assiduously recorded in the society columns; the men came in hunt and court costumes, and many wore wigs or powdered their hair.
