Hirohito (April 29, 1901 - January 7, 1989) was the 124th Emperor of Japan, ruled the Empire of Japan from December 25, 1926 to May 2, 1947, after which he was the Emperor of the State of Japan until his death. He was succeeded by his fifth child and eldest son, Akihito. Hiroshito and his wife, had seven children, two sons and five daughters. In Japan, the reigning emperors are known only as the "Emperor". He is now called primarily by his posthumous name, Seva (昭和), which is the name of an era that coincides with his reign; for this reason, he is also known as the Showa Emperor or Showa Emperor. By 1979, Hirohito was the only monarch in the world with the title "Emperor".
