Willy MAYWALD (German, Kleve 1907 - 1985 Paris)

Willy MAYWALD (Clèves 1907-1985 Paris) the German photographer. He was well known for his portrait and fashion photography. When he moved to Paris he began a career of photo reporting. He also photographed various subjects such as artists, dancers and fashion. In 1942 he moved to Switzerland and was held captive in camps for foreigners. In 1943 he start working again in portrait photography as a self-employed artist. In the year 1946, he moved back to Paris and he mainly focused on fashion and celebrity photography. He photographed for various fashion designers (Dior, Pierre Balmain, Jacques Griffe, Jacques Heim, Jacques Fath, Gabrielle Chanel ou Schiaparelli) and his images were recognized internationally. He was one of the first photographers to do fashion photography in the streets of Paris. Maywald was the main photographer for Christian Dior. He makes the photos of his first collection of February 12, 1947. His fashion photos appeared in Figaro's album, Femina, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. He continued his career as a fashion photographer until 1968, the same year he worked for the fashion designers: Pierre Cardin, André Courrèges, Jean Dessès, Jeanne Lanvin, Jean Patou, Nina Ricci. He died in 1985 in Paris.
