Edward MOLYNEUX (British, 1891-1974)
Edward Molyneux, known as "Captain Molyneux" Irish of Huguenot origin, was born on September 5, 1891 in London. He is a fashion designer and perfumer whose fashion house operated from 1919 to 1950. He participated in the First World War as an infantry captain in the British army where he lost an eye on the French front. From him come his nickname "captain". In 1919, after working for seamstress Lucy Duff Gordon as an illustrator, he opened his own fashion house in Paris at 14 rue Royale. Molyneux was the creator to whom a fashionable woman would turn in the 20's and 30's when she wanted to be absolutely "right" and unpredictable. He mingled with the interwar aristocracy and café society in Paris and helped to better understand the needs of women in this age of change and freedom. He had the safest hands, dressed in Gertude Lawrence for the stage and Princess Marina of Greece for his marriage to the Duke of Kent. Molyneux died on March 23, 1974 in Monte Carlo.
