Eve M. S. GUTHRIE (British, 20th century)
Eve M. S. GUTHRIE was a well-known illustrator of ballet dancers in the 1930's - 1960s. She was the illustrator for the "Wells" series of children's books on ballet.
She's in the main dictionary of artists as Mrs Eve GUTHRIE, living at Swanston Cottage, Storeton in Cheshire, and having exhibited at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool.
She was really passionate about the ballet and was very much a specialist in paintings of ballet and ballerinas. The watercolours representing different ballet scenes are from 1925 to 1956, and paintings of hers of famous ballet dancers were published in a book called "Pictures From The Ballet" by Robert Grant and sons in 1945. The lithograph prints of her work were produced not long after, and the Soho Gallery, who are specified on the prints as counting themselves her sole agents, were not just selling the prints but were also where she exhibited and sold her original watercolours.
Eve M.S.GUTHRIE, knew most of the dancers personally, attending many of their performances. She exhibited her works at The Medici Society Gallery, 63 Bold Street, Liverpool, July 13th-27th 1938. The Medici Society, 26 Thurloe Street, South Kensington, London S.W.7, ' Exhibition of Watercolour Sketches of the Russian Ballet by Eve M.S. Guthrie', September 7th-20th,1938.
