Blue Moon (American, 1925-1953)
Blue Moon was a highly successful American hosiery and shoe brand founded by Philadelphia hosiery manufacturer Largman Gray Company in 1925. Known for producing sheer silk stockings in a variety of vibrant and classic shades like Flesh, Blond, Orchid, Nude, and Jenny, Blue Moon prominently partnered with shoe brands during the 1920s and 1930s to cross-promote their sheer products. The patent date of December 24, 1929, corresponds with the peak of the brand's early advertising boom. In 1926-1929 the famous Blue Moon Fairy ad was made by illustrator Gustaf TENGRREN, who later worked as illustrator for Disney on Snow White, Fantasia, Pinocchio, and Bambi. Then went to Little Golden books where he did Poky Little Puppy and Scrawney, Tawny Lion. In that time the company had head office at 389 Fifth Avenue, New York. The Largman Gray Company ceased active standalone operations in 1926 after its primary Largman-Gray Knitting Mill at M Street and Erie Avenue in Philadelphia was acquired by the Gotham Silk Hosiery Company, but continued to appoint sales executives for "Blue Moon" as late as 1953. The brand disappeared from commercial hosiery registers and trade directories shortly thereafter.
