Otto LUCAS (British, Germany b. 1903 – 1971, Aarsele, Belgium)
Otto LUCAS was one of the most famous 20th-century British hatter, who lived and worked in London from the 1930s to his sudden death in 1971. He was born in Mülheim an der Ruhr, learning millinery in Paris and Berlin, moved to London and opened his first shop at 11-12 New Cavendish Street, where he remained until 1935 when he relocated to 87-91 New Bond Street. Among his clients there were Greta GARBO and Wallis SIMPSON. He worked closely with members of the Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers and supplied major department stores, such as Fortnum & Mason in London, David Jones in Australia (since 1934) and Saks Fifth Avenue in USA. The fashion history even preserved his personal color – "Lucas red". He also trained many milliners counting Frederick FOX and Philip SOMERVILLE, who would later become milliner to Queen Elizabeth II. His life was cut short in a plane crash over Belgium in October 1971. In its last year of operation, his studio have made and delivered over 55 000 of his designs.
