Stephen BURROWS (American, born Newark, USA, in 1943)
Stephen BURROWS is one of the first African American fashion designers to achieve international success. He won three Coty Awards in his career and represented the USA in a 1973 showing at Versailles alongside French couturiers.
BURROWS studied at Fashion Institute of Technology, then began work in the New York City's Garment Center at blouse manufacturer, Weber Originals. Gradually his work was picked up by small shops, and in 1968 he began working with Andy WARHOL and his entourage at Max's Kansas City and selling his clothing across the street at his "O Boutique" on Park Avenue South. His team consisted of his friends: leather designer Bobby BRESLAU, former FIT classmate William HILL as the patternmaker, and fabric designer Hector TORRES. The "O Boutique" closed in the spring of 1970. BURROWS and his partner Roz RUBENSTEIN created a ready-to-wear collection that was sold to the luxury department store Bonwit Teller. Then BURROWS was introduced to Geraldine STUTZ, Bendel's owner. She loved the coat he wore and gave him an in-store boutique "Stephen Burrow’s World" at Henri Bendel on West 57th Street in 1970. Fashion model Pat CLEVELAND was a fitting model at this studio. His used color blocking with fluid fabrics, and his garments, known for their "lettuce hem" became an integral part of the New York City disco-dancing scene of the 1970s.
Many years later, when the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored BURROWS with "The Board of Directors Special Tribute" (2006), expanding his business empire, he launched the brand "Everyday Girl", that was inspired by Anna CLEVELAND, daughter of the first muse and model Pat CLEVELAND. He also launched "S by Burrows" for a venture with Home Shopping Europe (HSN) in Munich, Germany, and "SB73", a knit line that was developed based on his hallmark, color-blocked creations of the 1970s. In 2013 BURROWS' work was celebrated at the Museum of the CIty of New York in an exhibit entitled "Stephen Burrows: When Fashion Danced". The opening was attended by longtime supporters like Iman, Pat CLEVELAND, Diane Von FURSTENBERG, and Anna SUI.
