Grupo Tony (Mexican, founded circa 1965)
Grupo Tony is Mexican manufacturer of jackets, shirts, and vests of the highest quality, backed by over 60 years of experience. The company located in Mérida – the capital of Mexican state Yucatán. The company also produce guayabera, which is often called the Mexican wedding shirt, a significant symbol of Mexico's cultural heritage.
Mexican men wear this type of shirt as often as men in other parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. In Mexico, the guayabera is a prominent part of the cultural life of the coastal city of Veracruz and the Yucatan Peninsula, both of which have long and historic ties to Cuba. Tradition holds that Yucatecan first saw this shirt on Cuba in the late 19th or early 20th century. After guayabera production declined in Cuba, Mexican manufacturers of Merida took over. Mexican production boomed in the 1970s, mostly due to President Luis Echeverria, weared the guayabera while on public duty, which helped popularize it both in Mexico and abroad. Although since then Chinese competition had led to a significant decline in guayabera production in Merida, the city remains a major center for the shirt production. The intricate embroidery that adorns the front of this garment is generally considered to be the Yucatan contribution to the guayabera style.
