Alexandre ZINOVIEV (Russian, Moscow 1889 - 1977 Paris)

Painter, graphic artist, set designer. In 1908 moved to Paris, settled in Montparnasse. In early works was influenced by cubism. Carried out the portraits, still lifes, landscapes (real and imagined), pictures-аllegories, genre scenes; worked in various techniques of etching (color aquatint, soft varnish). In 1912 for theatre in Toulouse designed the G. Bizet opera "Carmen".
In 1909 was exhibited at the Salon of Independents. In 1910 participated in exhibitions in St. Petersburg and Moscow; in the Russian section of the International exhibition of graphics and printings in Leipzig – in 1914.
Was participant of the Foreign Legion during the First world war. After demobilization worked for French and American magazines: "Gazette du Bon Ton", "Fémina", "Fantasio", "Art and Industry" and others and for advertising for cosmetic companies. Created the interior paintings of music hall, casino, cabaret — "Ambassadeur", "Folies Bergère", "Casino de Paris", "Grand-Café" (1937); sketches of costumes for the dancers of the variety shows. Participated in the design of the Palais de Chaillot to the world exhibition in Paris (1937).
Created the costumes for the play "Salome" of О. Wilde (1923). Collaborated with the N. Baliev‘s theater-cabaret "The Bat" (1927); in theatrical works was close to Mir iskusstva aesthetics.
In 1938 took French citizenship. In the postwar years was engaged in easel painting and graphics, performed wall paintings in private houses of Paris.
Personal exhibitions were held in the galleries "La Boëtie" (1925), "Au Portique" (1933).
Works are represented in Museum collections, including the Pushkin Museum.
