Eugène LACOSTE (French, 1818 - 1907)
Eugène LACOSTE is a French designer, painter and illustrator but also a costume designer. He designed the costumes for numerous operas and musical shows at the end of the 19th century.
Pierre Eugène LACOSTE was born in Paris on February 11, 1818. He was trained in drawing and painting by the painters Léon COGNIET and Nicolas GOSSE. He perfected his apprenticeship in the workshop of theater decorators Charles-Antoine CAMBON and René Humanite PHILASTRE. From 1855, he devoted himself mainly to the creation of costumes, working for most of the subsidized Parisian theaters including the Théâtre Lyrique and the Opéra-Comique. In 1876, decided to produce "Sylvia ou la Nymphe de Diane", a ballet in three acts by Léo DELIBES. It is the first ballet performed at the Opéra Garnier which has just been inaugurated. Mounted with a luxury that turned out to be excessive, the sumptuous set by Jules CHERET, poorly lit, harmed the quality of the production while the costumes designed by LACOSTE met with great success. He immediately established himself to the exclusion of all others, signing the models of all creations, both operas (including “Aida” by Guiseppe Verdi in 1880) and ballets. After his abrupt resignation in 1885, he returned once again in 1892 for the Parisian creation of “Salammbô” by Ernest REYER. Eugène LACOSTE died in Paris on October 28, 1907 at the age of 89.
