Le Miroir des Modes (French, 1887 – 1934)
Le Miroir des Modes was a French fashion sewing magazine & catalog proposing women templates. It was edited by The Butterick Publishing Co., settled 2 Avenue de l'Opéra (Paris).
This magazine was one of the “white whales” of French sewing magazines. It was a sort of catalog, that had page after page of stunning color and black and white fashion plates, a few articles, and some really amazing advertisements. This monthly magazine, the French sister publication to the American “The Delineator”, was published between 1887 and 1934 by Butterick, an editorial empire founded by Ebenezer BUTTERICK, a tailor from New England (USA). The publisher had at one time more than 30 magazines.
“The Delineator” served as a marketing tool for Butterick patterns and discussed fashion and fabrics, including advice for home sewists. By 1876, E. Butterick & Co. had become a worldwide enterprise selling patterns as far away as Paris, London, Vienna and Berlin, with 100 branch offices and 1,000 agencies throughout the United States and Canada.
