Burberry (British, founded 1856)
Burberry is a fashion brand founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry. In 1888, the latter patented the gabardine, a fabric allowing Burberry to become a major creator of rain clothes. Gabardine coats were worn by explorers as Fridtjof Hansen. These models eventually gave birth to the trench coat, invented by Burberry for British First World War soldiers. In the 1920s, Burberry patented another successful invention, the check pattern. Then, the brand got consecration in 1955 when the queen Elizabeth II gave it a royal mandate for its fabric. With a diversification of its products and more than 500 shops all around the world, Burberry is still today a major player in fashion and luxury industry.
