Georges Gabriel THENON (French, 1884 - 1941)

Georges Gabriel THENON, pen name and stage name of RIP (acronym for Rire, Ironie, Plaisanterie = Laugh, Irony, Joke) was a French chansonnier, draughtsman, librettist and revue creator. Georges Benjamin Gabriel THENON is the son of Georges Marie Emile THENON, Deputy Director at the Bank of Paris and the Netherlands and Elisabeth Louise RUTH. Georges was destined for a career in the office, like that of his father, who made him join Société Générale bank. Yet gifted in drawing and endowed with an artistic spirit, he preferred to take classes at the Académie Julian. Then he entered to the studio of one of his teacher at the Académie Julian, the painter William BOUGUEREAU (1825-1905). But the too academic style does not suit the modern character of THENON. He prefere puts his talent to the benefit of small caricatures which he sells, as a street artist, under the acronym R.I.P for "Rire, Ironie, Plaisanterie" (Laugh, Irony, Joke). After his military service, he began to collaborate occasionally with publications such as Comœdia, Figaro, Candide, but also with sometimes intermittent and sometimes ephemeral publications. In 1906, he wrote with a former college friend, the operetta singer and future actor, Paul Samuel ARDOT (1885-1917), 2 reviews: "Bon inventory… ô gué!" and "À perdu de revue", presented at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal. He surrounds himself with acquaintances who will become the future stars of the early 20th century. In "Bon inventory... ô gué!", Paul Ardot interprets the pedicure, while the daughter of Édouard FOSSEY, an accountant from his former bank, then a young beginner interprets Liane: This is Geneviève Lantelme, future celebrity and fashion icon. The role of the Viscount is played by Robert Saidreau, future director, screenwriter and French film producer. The dice are cast. THENON, under the pseudonym of RIP, will write more than a hundred reviews during his career, twelve operettas, 10 comedies and will shoot 7 films. Georges Gabriel THENON had married Madeleine Marthe Huguette CAUDRON, without descendants, they raised their nephew Claude GARNIER (journalist designer) son of Geneviève Adélaïde THENON and the painter Pierre Henri GARNIER-SALBREUX. RIP died on May 25, 1941.
