House of Millot (French, founded 1839)

The Millot perfume house (Parfums Millot) existed from 1839 to 1966, when it was sold to Révillon, who continued producing its most prominent perfume, "Crêpe de Chine" until about 1980. The Parisian perfume house F.Millot was able to make itself a prominent place on the market between 1860 and 1970. By its essentially family character, this house has a particular importance in the history of perfumery. Félix MILLOT, born in a family from Bouchon-sur-Saulx in the Meuse, became a perfumer at 30. Not a designer, but a merchant and manufacturer, like most of his colleagues in the second half of the nineteenth century. At that time, the discovery of synthetic molecules, the expansion of commercial exchanges and the evolution of industrial techniques, are all factors that promise to perfume a very bright future. Unfortunately Felix died at the age of forty-four years. Louise, his wife, will expertly lead the perfumery and make it one of the twenty most important of the end of the century, next to the Guerlain, Piver, or Roger & Gallet. She will hand over the torch to her grandchildren who will have to go through the trials of wars, economic, monetary and social crises, but who will pass on the heritage to their children in their turn. During this beautiful history, we witnessed the birth of more than three hundred creations, mostly perfumes. But only a few, created by Jean DESPREZ, will reach us: Recital, Altitude, Gaze, Precious Woods and Crepe de Chine. The F.Millot perfumery has surrounded itself with great artists, such as Hector GUIMARD, for the creation of its bottles, caskets, advertisements, for the decoration of its stores and stands in the various Exhibitions which have earned it many rewards. The factories were located in Asnières, in Gabrielle CHANEL's former hosiery, in 1934. In 1966, they are sold to the company "Parfums Révillon" which will produce Millot perfumes until around 1980
