Con-ta (German, founded 1920)

Con-ta is a German underwear production and retailer company, in the region which is considered the cradle of the German textile industry: the Swabian Jura. Founded in 1920 in Tailfingen, by two brothers Karl and Christian CONZELMANN, first named “Gebr. Conzelmann". Karl CONZELMANN was the eldest of 5 children. Through his father, Karl came into contact with the profession of tricot weaver at an early age and so it was obvious that he should also take the same path after graduating from school at the age of 14. The jersey fabrics were knitted on their own machines, finished under contract, cut to size in the factory and sewn together to form the finished product. In the early years, available rooms in Karl CONZELMANN's house served as production facilities. Just one year after the foundation, a building site for the construction of a "real factory" could be acquired and shortly afterwards a new building, which was spacious by the standards of the time, was built. It was constantly expanded and improved and the company developed a good name and reputation in professional circles. In 1934 the company acquired a significant interest in the spinning mill in Wannweil. This development continued until 1939. During World War II, a large part of the factory was cleared for war-related manufacturing. After the end of the war, production resumed with the equipment that was left and as far as raw materials were available. Due to the great demand, the company flourished again. The rebuilding, expansion and new equipment provided new impetus. Tailfingen as a production site was no longer sufficient and so the company -con-ta- spread over the Swabian Jura. On June 14, 1942, the co-founder Christian CONZELMANN died unexpectedly. In the early 1950s, Karl CONZELMANN purchased 65 company apartments from his own funds and made them available to his employees. In the years that followed, the underwear, which was manufactured entirely on the Alb, developed into one of the most sought-after items on the German underwear market. The production capacities and the number of employees at Gebrüder Conzelmann increased rapidly across all production sites in the Swabian Jura. At the end of the 1960s, the brand -con-ta- (abbreviation of the surname Conzelmann and the town of Tailfingen) was entered in the register of the German Trademark and Patent Office.
