Louis SPRECHER (French, Ingwiller 1860 - 1935)
Louis SPRECHER, born August 18 (or 15), 1860 in Ingwiller (Bas-Rhin) and died in 1935, is one of the thirteen children of Joseph SPRECHER, hosier. After the annexation of Alsace to the German Empire, Louis SPRECHER left his native land.
He comes to Paris where he will be a photographer. In 1884, aged 24, he succeeded Nicolas HARMAND, who died on May 11, 1884, in the studio at 154, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine where he operated for twenty years under the name "Grande Photographie Moderne". This is where his daughter Marguerite was born on October 25, 1891.
He sold his business to Paul MARTIGNON in August 1903. Thereafter, Louis SPRECHER worked at 69, rue de Turbigo in Paris. On the back of the portraits made in this workshop, we find the mentions "Photography of Art of the Municipal School Turgot... Louis Sprécher, professor, operates himself". The photographer was divided between the courses he gave at the Turgot school located at 69, rue de Turbigo and his professional studio located at the same address.
