Antoine Pierre Philippe LA PENNE (French, Auterive 1844 - 1927 Paris)

Antoine Pierre Philippe LA PENNE is a French genre painter, born in Auterive on January 19, 1844 where his father was a postman. He had a sister and a brothern who married a young lady BRUS, daughter of a butler of the Duke of La Rochefoucault. At the young age Antoine LE PENNE left his family to go study to Paris, where he became the student of Alexandre CABANEL. His real name, LAPENNE, was written in one word, but the young painter found it more aristocratic to cut it in two. On January 18, 1878 at the age of 34 he married Madame DEDIEU in Toulon who was from Toulouse and had been his model. He appeared at the Salon from 1877. Was a member of the French Artists in 1883 and obtained an honorable mention in 1882. Antoine Pierre Philippe LA PENNE died in Paris at his home at 102 rue du Cherche-Midi, where he had lived for more than 30 years, on May 31, 1927 without leaving any children. His wife had died a few years before.
