Eugène DARNAY (French, 1831 - 1901)

Eugène Darnay is a French photographer active during the second half of the 19th century. Eugène Darnay was born on January 23, 1831 in Joigny (Yonne) where his father was a forest surveyor. He married in Paris in April 1860 with Marie Blanche Anne BRENEY. The couple moved to Tours. DARNAY was fond of miniature painting when he opened his photography studio in Poitiers (Vienne) on March 26, 1861 at 16, rue Magenta. In July 1863, he opened a branch in Châtellerault (Vienne) and at the same time joined forces with Victor MOTTE. The latter succeeded him when Darnay left Poitiers for Melun (Seine-et-Marne) where his presence was attested in the fall of 1865. His studio was located rue Saint Jacques in the former Hotel de France.He changed his address several times in this city before ending his career at 25, avenue Thiers where Léon Delaporte, who had been his employee, took over from him around 1889. DARNAY died in Yvelines on December 20, 1901.
